Invasive Species Pressure
Measures the impact and threat posed by non-native species introduced into ecosystems where they do not naturally occur. These invasive species can outcompete, displace, or even eradicate native species, leading to significant disruptions in ecosystem function and biodiversity. The pressure from invasive species is a global concern as it affects all types of environments—terrestrial, freshwater, and marine—and can lead to irreversible ecological changes and economic losses.
Managing invasive species pressure involves a comprehensive strategy that includes prevention, early detection, rapid response, and control or eradication of established invasive species. Effective management requires international cooperation, stringent biosecurity measures, and public awareness campaigns to prevent introductions. Once invasive species are established, targeted removal programs, habitat restoration, and continuous monitoring are essential to mitigate their impact and restore native biodiversity.

Source and Calculation
Lists of invasive species per country are sourced from the Global Alien Species First Record Database. Shapefiles of terrestrial and marine species’ extent of occurrence are sourced from the IUCN Red List, BirdLife International and the Global Assessment of Reptile Distributions Initiative, and used to create country lists of native species. The proportion of a country’s non-native species, weighted by the number of native species of the same group (e.g., mammals, birds) is then calculated. A minimum score is given to a country that has non-native species make up 25% or more of its biodiversity.*Different sources offer varying data, as datasets may be subject to changes due to recent updates and revisions.
