Ratification of CITES

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is a key international agreement aimed at ensuring that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. The convention plays a crucial role in conserving biodiversity by regulating and monitoring the trade in endangered species and their derivatives, helping to prevent illegal wildlife trafficking. Ratifying the convention signifies a country’s formal commitment to adhere to the regulations that govern the international trade of endangered and threatened species.

When a country ratifies CITES, it agrees to implement its three-tiered system of regulations and permits, which classify species into different appendices based on their level of threat and the impact of trade on their survival. This ratification not only obliges the country to enforce stringent measures to control and monitor the trade of endangered species but also facilitates international cooperation in conservation efforts. It also underscores the country’s role in the global movement to preserve biodiversity and sustainable development, enhancing its capacity to engage in and benefit from international conservation initiatives and support systems.

The higher the score, the better the country ranks for this parameter.

The table is sorted from the highest score to the lowest:
