Species Threatened (Marine)

This metric indicates the proportion of marine species at risk of extinction, highlighting the pressures on marine biodiversity. It is essential to understand the extent of the threat marine species face from overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution, and the impacts of climate change, such as ocean acidification and warming waters. High percentages suggest critical vulnerabilities within marine ecosystems and underscore the need for immediate, effective conservation action.

By monitoring this metric, policymakers and conservationists can better allocate resources and prioritize interventions in the most affected marine areas. Strategies to address the high percentage of threatened marine species include establishing marine protected areas, enforcing sustainable fishing practices, and restoring damaged marine habitats.

The higher the score, the better the country ranks for this parameter.

Source and Calculation

Shapefiles of marine species’ extent of occurrence are sourced from the IUCN Red List, and used to create country lists of marine species. Global Red List assessments are sourced from the IUCN Red List. A minimum score is given to a country that has 50% or more of its assessed species in one of the three threatened categories (Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered).

*Different sources offer varying data, as datasets may be subject to changes due to recent updates and revisions.
