Population 18,000 – 30,000
10-20% continuous rapid decline

A graceful bird of prey that seems almost like a ghost drifting over the open landscapes of Eurasia. Slim, long-winged, and agile in flight, it is one of the most elegant raptors in the harrier family, often compared to a falcon for its slender build and swift movements. Found across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and parts of India, this harrier is a long-distance migrant that spends summers breeding on the vast steppes and winters in warmer regions, gliding over grasslands, marshes, and farmlands.

In appearance, the pallid harrier is sleek and refined. Males are particularly striking, with pale silver-gray plumage, jet-black wingtips, and a clean white rump, giving them a ghostly look against the sky. Females and juveniles, in contrast, are streaked in warm browns with buffy underparts, camouflaged beautifully against the steppe and farmland where they hunt. All share the characteristic owl-like facial disk of harriers, which helps them detect faint sounds while scanning low over fields for prey. Watching one quarter of a meadow, wings held in a distinctive shallow “V,” is like seeing poetry in motion.

The pallid harrier is primarily a hunter of the small and vulnerable. Its diet consists mostly of small birds, rodents, lizards, and large insects, which it captures with sudden, agile dives after gliding low over the ground. Unlike heavier hawks and eagles, it relies on stealth and speed rather than brute force. During the breeding season on the steppes, pairs build nests on the ground, usually hidden in tall grasses. The female incubates while the male provides food, and later both parents feed the chicks, which grow quickly in the short summer window before migration begins.
