A tall, elegant waterbird known for its graceful posture, striking plumage, and patient hunting style. Despite its name, the purple heron is not vividly purple—instead, it features a beautiful mix of rich chestnut, gray, and deep purplish hues, especially along its neck and shoulders. Found across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, this heron prefers quiet wetlands, often shying away from human activity and sticking to the reed beds and marshy fringes of lakes, rivers, and swamps.

Its most distinctive feature is its long, snake-like neck, which is reddish-brown with bold black streaks, and a finely pointed yellowish bill ideal for spearing prey. The body is mostly dark gray with tinges of purplish chestnut, especially in good lighting, giving the bird its somewhat misleading but poetic name.

The purple heron is a skilled and stealthy hunter, using a slow, creeping walk or statuesque stillness to ambush prey. It feeds mainly on fish, frogs, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and occasionally small mammals or birds. It hunts by standing motionless or moving with great caution, striking with lightning speed when something edible moves within reach. Its long legs allow it to wade quietly through shallow waters or stand among dense reeds, almost invisible thanks to its subtle coloration and slender build.

Purple herons are migratory in many parts of their range, especially in Europe and Asia, where they move to Africa or southern Asia for the winter. In Africa, some populations are resident year-round, particularly in central and southern regions where wetlands remain wet throughout the year.
