It stands out as one of the most striking and regal birds within the pigeon family. Native exclusively to the lowland rainforests and swamps of northern New Guinea, this species is renowned not only for its considerable size but also for its spectacular appearance, most notably its ornate feathered crest that resembles a delicate lace fan perched atop its head. This crest, combined with deep blue-grey plumage and striking red eyes, gives the western crowned pigeon an air of nobility unmatched in the avian world.

As one of the largest pigeon species, the western crowned pigeon is quite robust, typically weighing up to 2.5 kilograms (6 pounds) and reaching lengths of about 70 centimeters (28 inches). This substantial size makes it more akin to a turkey than its smaller, urban pigeon cousins. The bird’s body is covered with beautiful bluish-grey feathers, and it sports a distinctive white mask around its eyes, enhancing its solemn expression. The chest is adorned with intricate patterns of maroon that add to its dignified appearance.

Unlike many other birds, the western crowned pigeon spends a significant amount of time on the ground. It is predominantly terrestrial, walking with a slow and deliberate gait as it forages for food. Its diet mainly consists of fallen fruits, seeds, and occasionally small invertebrates, which it finds in the dense forest floor. Despite its size and ground-dwelling habits, the pigeon can fly up to the lower branches of trees to roost or escape danger, though it is not known for long flights.

The breeding habits of the western crowned pigeon are also quite fascinating. The bird is monogamous, often forming long-term pair bonds. The female usually lays a single large white egg in a rudimentary nest made from twigs and leaves, situated in the lower canopy of the forest. Both parents are involved in incubating the egg and caring for the chick once it hatches, which underscores the species’ strong parental instincts.
