Platysaurus – Flat lizards

Sexual dimorphism is highly dramatic in some species

These lizards belong to a genus known for their remarkably flattened bodies, which allow them to squeeze into the tightest crevices of rocky outcrops and cliffs. Found in countries like South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, flat lizards are masters of survival in rugged, sun-baked landscapes. Their body shape isn’t just for show—it’s a brilliant evolutionary adaptation for avoiding predators, escaping heat, and navigating the rocky environments they call home.

One of the most striking things about flat lizards is their coloration. Males of many species are vibrantly colored, with bright blues, oranges, yellows, or greens often decorating their throats, tails, or sides—especially during the breeding season. These bold colors are used to attract females and to assert dominance over other males. In contrast, females and juveniles tend to have more muted, camouflaged patterns of browns and grays, helping them blend in with the rocks and avoid predators like birds or snakes.

What makes flat lizards especially interesting is their behavior. They are active during the day and spend much of their time basking on warm rocks, soaking up the sun before darting off to hunt insects. Their diet includes ants, beetles, termites, and other small invertebrates. They’re fast and agile runners and can vanish into cracks in the rock in a split second if danger approaches. Their flattened bodies and wide, smooth scales reduce drag as they slip into crevices where few predators can follow. It’s like nature’s version of a built-in escape hatch.

Some flat lizards are known for their social behavior. While many lizard species are solitary, flat lizards often live in loose colonies, especially in areas where rocky shelters are abundant. Males maintain small territories and display to each other with head-bobs and tail-waving. These interactions can be surprisingly complex for reptiles, suggesting a more social side to their nature than you might expect.
