Cheloniidae – Modern sea turtles

These strong long-distance swimmers are often considered the most majestic of all the turtle families, sea turtles are large, ocean-going reptiles known for their gentle nature and long lifespan.

Except for the flatback sea turtle, all species of sea turtles occur in North American waters and are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

From the first moment, it hatches, the sea turtle’s life is a constant struggle for survival in the unforgiving environment of a sea. Humans have revered sea turtles for millennia. Many creation stories in various world cultures feature tales of our world being built on the back of a sea turtle.
