Population

Found mainly in East Asia—including China, Korea, Japan, and parts of Russia—this non-venomous Snake is well-known for its bold and eye-catching pattern. Its body is typically dark brown or black with bright red or reddish-orange crossbands that give it its common name. These colorful markings make it stand out compared to many other wolf snakes, which often display white or yellow bands instead. The pattern also serves as a kind of protective mimicry, making predators think twice, since many brightly colored snakes in nature are venomous.

One of the unique features of the red-banded snake, like its wolf snake relatives, is its enlarged, wolf-like teeth at the front of its upper jaw. These hooked teeth are perfect for catching and holding onto slippery prey such as frogs, small fish, and amphibians, which make up much of its diet. Unlike some other Lycodon species that are more lizard-focused, the red-banded snake is often found near rivers, rice fields, and wetlands where it can take advantage of its amphibian-rich environment. This link to watery habitats sets it apart from many other wolf snakes that prefer drier or rocky areas.

In terms of behavior, the red-banded snake is generally secretive and nocturnal. By day, it hides under rocks, logs, or leaf litter, and by night, it becomes active, prowling for prey. Although it can appear intimidating because of its bold colors and quick movements, it is harmless to humans. If threatened, it may flatten its body or writhe violently in an effort to scare off predators, but it rarely bites unless handled. Even if it does, it poses no danger, as it lacks venom and is not aggressive by nature.
