A graceful tree squirrel of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Unlike the familiar gray squirrels often seen in city parks, this species is more closely connected to wild canyons, mountain forests, and streamside woodlands. It usually has gray fur on its back, a pale belly, and a long, full tail edged with white. Its soft coloring helps it blend into tree trunks, rocks, and shadows along wooded valleys.

One thing that makes the Arizona gray squirrel special is its strong association with riparian habitats, which are green areas near streams and rivers. In dry regions, these tree-filled places are very important because they provide food, shelter, and safe travel routes. The squirrel often lives among sycamores, walnuts, oaks, pines, and other trees found in canyon bottoms and mountain slopes. This makes it different from ground squirrels that dig burrows in open land and from city squirrels that easily adapt to parks and neighborhoods. The Arizona gray squirrel depends much more on healthy woodland corridors.

The Arizona gray squirrel eats many forest foods, including nuts, acorns, seeds, berries, fungi, buds, and sometimes other plant parts. Like many tree squirrels, it may help forests by carrying and burying seeds. Some of these forgotten seeds can grow into new trees, making the squirrel a small but useful forest planter. It is also an agile climber, using sharp claws and a long tail to balance as it moves along branches. When alarmed, it may freeze against bark, flick its tail, or dash through the trees. Its speed and quiet movements help it avoid hawks, bobcats, snakes, and other predators.
