Population

One of the most stunning and beloved parrots of eastern Australia, often stealing the show with its brilliant red and green plumage. Males are especially eye-catching, with a scarlet-red head, breast, and belly set against shimmering emerald wings and a long blue-green tail. Females, by contrast, are mostly green with a splash of red on the belly, making them much harder to spot among the leaves. This clear difference between the sexes makes it easy to tell them apart, even at a glance, and adds to their charm.

What sets the Australian king parrot apart from many of its noisy, rowdy parrot cousins is its gentle and calm personality. While cockatoos screech and lorikeets squabble, king parrots are relatively quiet, calling in soft whistles and chirps that sound almost polite. They often move in pairs or small family groups, as they are strongly monogamous and stick close to their mates. Their preferred habitats are moist forests, rainforests, and nearby woodlands, but they are also regular visitors to gardens and picnic areas, where they’re known to land on people’s hands and shoulders in search of seeds.

Australian king parrots feed on seeds, fruits, berries, nuts, and flowers, often foraging quietly among trees. Unlike some parrots that tear apart branches or strip bark, king parrots tend to eat in a more delicate, tidy fashion. Their strong, curved beaks allow them to crack open hard seeds with ease, but they’ll happily snack on softer foods like apples or sunflower seeds when offered. Because of this adaptability, they’re a common and welcome sight around rural properties and bird feeders.
