A graceful freshwater turtle found across the eastern Mediterranean. It thrives in slow-moving rivers, ponds, marshes, and canals. This adaptable reptile has learned to live wherever calm, warm water can be found, even in human-altered landscapes. Its ability to survive in both natural wetlands and irrigation channels makes it one of the region’s most resilient freshwater turtles.
The Balkan terrapin is medium-sized, with a smooth, oval shell. Its carapace ranges from olive-green to dark brown, often highlighted by subtle striping or lighter edges, while the plastron (the shell’s underside) is usually darker. The most distinctive feature, however, is its beautifully striped neck and limbs, marked by pale yellow or cream lines that stand out when it stretches in the sun. Its streamlined shell and webbed feet make it an excellent swimmer, perfectly suited for a semi-aquatic life.
This terrapin is omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, insects, small crustaceans, tadpoles, and sometimes carrion. Young individuals tend to eat more animal matter, while adults include more vegetation in their diet. It is a sun-loving species, often seen basking on rocks or logs near the water’s edge. When startled, it dives quickly into the water to hide beneath the mud or vegetation. During the cooler months, it hibernates underwater or in burrows near the banks. Females come ashore in spring or early summer to dig shallow nests, where they lay several small, elongated eggs that hatch under the warmth of the Mediterranean sun.
