One of the few hedgehogs perfectly adapted to cold, dry climates, thriving in regions where temperatures can swing from scorching summers to freezing winters. Named after the Dauria region—a vast expanse of rolling plains and forested hills shared by Mongolia and Russia—the Daurian hedgehog represents the quiet resilience of life in the heart of Asia.

Physically, the Daurian hedgehog is a medium-sized species. Its appearance is both adorable and practical: a rounded body covered with short, dense spines that range from brownish-gray to yellowish-brown, with lighter fur on the face and underbelly. Its snout is long and pointed, which is ideal for probing soil and leaf litter for insects and worms. The ears are small and rounded, helping minimize heat loss during the cold seasons, and its eyes are relatively large, giving it a bright, alert expression. Compared to European hedgehogs, the Daurian hedgehog has shorter spines and thicker fur, reflecting its adaptation to cold continental climates. Its feet are sturdy and clawed, perfect for digging through dry soil or snow.

When active, the Daurian hedgehog moves surprisingly quickly, shuffling, sniffing, and snorting as it searches for prey. Despite its prickly armor, it prefers to rely on stealth and camouflage rather than confrontation. If threatened, however, it can instantly curl into a tight ball, with its spines forming an impenetrable barrier against predators like foxes, owls, and steppe eagles. It may produce soft hisses or grunts when extremely agitated, but it generally remains silent, relying on its spines and stillness for defense.

One of the most interesting traits of the Daurian hedgehog is its resilience to extreme environments. It can survive in regions where winter temperatures drop below –30°C (–22°F) and summer highs exceed 35°C (95°F). Its thick underfur and ability to hibernate allow it to cope with cold, while behavioral adjustments—such as foraging at dusk during hot periods—help it avoid heat stress.
