The European turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur) is one of the most delicate and beautifully patterned doves in Europe, known not only for its soft, purring call but also for its symbolic connection to love, peace, and devotion in cultures across centuries. Unlike its more urban and widespread cousin, the Eurasian collared dove, the turtle dove is migratory, spending its summers in Europe and western Asia, and migrating south to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter.
The European turtle dove has a warm cinnamon-colored body, with a delicately scaled pattern on its wings, a pale belly, and a distinctive black-and-white striped patch on each side of its neck. In flight, it reveals a white-tipped tail and dark, rounded wings, giving it a striking silhouette against the sky. Its soft, rolling “turrr-turrr” call—where its name comes from—is a peaceful, purring sound often heard from a hidden perch during calm mornings.
European turtle doves feed mainly on seeds and grains, often foraging in open farmland or weedy field edges. They rely on wildflower meadows and hedgerows, which are rapidly disappearing in parts of Europe due to industrial farming. Their nests are loosely built platforms of twigs placed in trees or dense bushes, where they usually lay two eggs. Like other doves, they feed their chicks with “pigeon milk”, a protein-rich fluid produced by both parents.
A unique and touching trait of the turtle dove is its monogamous behavior. Pairs form strong, often lifelong bonds, and the birds are often seen foraging or resting together. This trait, along with their gentle nature and affectionate behavior, has made them enduring symbols of faithful love—from Shakespearean poetry to Christmas carols.
