Population 45,000 – 65,000
<10% decline over three generations

A medium-sized raptor of Europe and western Asia, known for its calm, deliberate flight and strong ties to wet meadows, mixed woodlands, and river valleys. It’s slightly smaller and more lightly built than the greater spotted eagle, with a more streamlined, elegant shape. Adults have dark brown plumage, a relatively small head, and a slightly paler nape. In flight, they show distinct pale patches on the upper wings, and a cleanly shaped, slightly rounded tail. Their overall look is understated, but in the right light their feathers catch warm, subtle bronze tones.

This eagle’s lifestyle revolves around quiet, traditional countryside landscapes. It prefers mosaic habitats — places where open meadows for hunting meet old trees for nesting. It rarely soars at extreme heights; instead, it patrols steadily above the land or perches on tall vantage points. The Lesser Spotted Eagle feeds mainly on small mammals, along with frogs, reptiles, large insects, and sometimes young birds. Unlike powerful eagle species that overpower large prey, this one succeeds through patience, timing, and careful scanning of the ground below.

One of the most impressive aspects of the lesser spotted eagle’s life cycle is its long migration. After breeding in Central and Eastern Europe and parts of western Asia, the species travels thousands of kilometers to southern and eastern Africa for the winter. Much of this journey follows well-established flyways such as the Balkans and the Middle East, where huge numbers of raptors funnel through narrow land corridors. The sight of these eagles soaring in thermals alongside storks, buzzards, and other migrating birds is one of the great natural spectacles of Eurasia.
