One of the coolest and most unique reptiles found in the Philippines. Unlike typical lizards that crawl on the ground or climb trees, this amazing creature can glide through the air, leaping from tree to tree like a tiny dragon. It does this using special wing-like flaps of skin, called patagia, which stretch out from its ribs. When it jumps, it spreads these flaps and soars through the forest, traveling distances of up to 10 meters (33 feet) in a single glide! This ability helps it escape predators and move around efficiently without having to climb down to the ground, where it would be more vulnerable.
What makes the Mindanao flying dragon even more fascinating is its brilliant colors. Males have bright yellow, orange, or red throat flaps (dewlaps) that they flash to attract females or defend their territory. Females, on the other hand, have duller colors, helping them stay hidden among the tree bark. Unlike most lizards that lay eggs in hidden ground nests, female flying dragons carefully deposit their eggs in the soil before returning to the trees, leaving their young to fend for themselves after hatching.
These little dragons are strictly tree-dwellers, spending nearly their entire lives clinging to tree trunks, hunting for ants and small insects. Despite their fantasy-like appearance, they are completely harmless to humans. Unfortunately, deforestation threatens their survival, as they depend on dense forests with plenty of tall trees for gliding and feeding.
