Population

A bold, vocal bird native to the dry grasslands and savannas of southern Africa, particularly in Namibia, Botswana, and parts of South Africa. Also known as the white-quilled bustard, this striking bird is part of the bustard family and is known for its loud, raspy calls and proud, upright strut across the open plains. Though not a large bird by bustard standards, it is full of personality and is one of the more visible and entertaining species in its habitat.

The northern black korhaan spends most of its time on the ground and only flies when necessary. The males are especially eye-catching, with jet-black underparts, a black neck and chest, and bold white markings on the wings and back, which become especially noticeable when the bird takes flight. The females are more camouflaged, with brown and tan mottled feathers that help them blend into the dry grass—especially important when they are nesting on the ground.

This bird is diurnal and mostly terrestrial, spending its day walking through the grass in search of insects, seeds, small reptiles, and other edible bits. It has a sharp eye and quick reflexes, snatching up beetles and grasshoppers with ease. Its loud, croaking call is one of its most well-known traits and can be heard from quite a distance. Males use this call to mark territory and attract mates, especially during the breeding season.

Breeding behavior is one of the most fascinating aspects of the northern black korhaan. Males become very territorial, performing a dramatic courtship display that includes raising their wings, puffing out their chests, and running with exaggerated steps while calling loudly. Once mating occurs, the female is solely responsible for nesting and raising the chicks.
