Population

A striking and colorful reptile found in the rocky deserts of the Middle East and North Africa. This lizard is well-known for its vibrant and intricate patterns, which make it one of the most eye-catching species in the region. Theira colors not only make it beautiful to look at but also help it blend into the rocky, sandy environments where it lives, providing some camouflage from predators.

One of the most distinctive features of the ornate mastigure is its tail, which is covered in hard, spiky scales. This spiny tail is used for defense. When threatened, the lizard can swing its tail like a club to ward off predators. The spikes are sharp enough to cause injury, making this tail a very effective weapon. The lizard also uses its tail to block the entrance to its burrow when it is inside, creating a barrier that is difficult for predators to breach.

Ornate mastigures have strong legs and sharp claws, which make them excellent climbers and diggers. These lizards are primarily herbivores, feeding mostly on leaves, flowers, and fruits found in their desert habitat. They have strong, flat teeth that are perfect for grinding up tough plant material. Occasionally, they may also eat insects, but plants make up the majority of their diet.

These lizards are well-adapted to life in the desert. They are most active during the day, particularly in the morning when they come out to bask in the sun to warm up. The heat from the sun is essential for their metabolism and digestion. As the day gets hotter, they will often retreat to their burrows or hide among rocks to avoid the extreme midday temperatures. Their burrows are typically dug into the sides of hills or under rocks, providing them with a cool, safe place to rest and escape from predators.
