Population

A small, brightly colored bird that catches the eye with its vivid yellow plumage. Males are particularly striking during the breeding season, with their golden-yellow feathers contrasted by a black face mask and chest, creating a dramatic appearance. On the other hand, the females are more modestly colored, with a mix of brown and yellow that helps them blend into their surroundings. Both males and females have short, conical beaks perfect for their seed-based diet.

One of the most distinct characteristics of Rüppell’s weaver is its intricate nest-building skills. Males are responsible for constructing the nests, which are spherical structures made from grass and other plant fibers. These nests are often found hanging from the branches of acacia trees, offering some protection from predators. The entrance to the nest is usually located at the bottom, adding an extra layer of defense.
Rüppell’s weavers are social birds, often found in large colonies. These colonies can be noisy places, with the birds constantly chattering and calling to each other. Their calls are a mix of chirps and whistles, which add a lively soundtrack to their habitats. They are found in a range of environments, from savannas and grasslands to scrublands and agricultural areas across East Africa.

Rüppell’s weaver is an adaptable bird, thriving in various habitats and making use of different food sources depending on availability. Their primary diet consists of seeds, but they also eat insects, especially during the breeding season when they need extra protein to feed their young. This adaptability helps them survive in changing environments and ensures their success across a wide range.
