Superb pitta

Superb pitta

EXEWCRENVUNTLCDDNE

Population 250 – 1,000

Found only on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, it is one of the most spectacularly colored birds in the world—a walking burst of tropical art. Its body combines velvety black, brilliant turquoise-blue, rich chestnut, and flashes of bright scarlet under the tail. The head carries a bold black face with a striking pale blue eyebrow stripe that makes the bird look almost masked, like a tiny superhero of the forest floor. When sunlight filters through the trees and hits its feathers, the colors seem to glow.

Like other pittas, it spends much of its time on the ground, walking and hopping through dense lowland rainforest rather than flying high in the canopy. It uses its strong legs to move confidently across leaf litter, fallen branches, and tangled roots, searching for food with careful attention. Its diet is made up mostly of insects, small invertebrates, and earthworms, which it plucks from the forest floor with quick, precise jabs of its bill. Watching a superb pitta feed can feel like watching a focused little detective: head cocked to one side, listening and looking, then suddenly striking when it spots a meal.

What distinguishes the superb pitta from many other colorful birds is its ability to remain secretive. You might imagine a bird this bright would be impossible to miss, yet in the dim light under tall trees, its colors blend surprisingly well with patches of shadow and sun. It often freezes when disturbed, trusting its camouflage rather than flying away. Many people encounter it first not with their eyes but with their ears. The superb pitta has a loud, distinctive call—usually a series of clear, ringing notes that echo through the forest. These calls carry far and help birdwatchers locate it, but even then, getting a good view can take patience and luck.
