A lively, social, and highly adaptable rodent found across the dry landscapes of East Africa. Ranging through Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, and northern Tanzania, this squirrel thrives in savannas, semi-deserts, scrublands, and open grasslands where trees are sparse and the sun is intense. Unlike the tree-dwelling squirrels many people imagine, the unstriped ground squirrel lives almost entirely on the ground, digging burrows and forming bustling colonies that keep the dry plains full of quiet movement and constant activity.
In appearance, the Unstriped ground squirrel is sleek and elegant. It has warm, reddish-brown to sandy fur across the back and flanks, with a paler cream-colored belly. Unlike some of its close relatives—such as the striped ground squirrel—this species has no body stripes, giving it a smooth, uniform look that blends naturally with dry soils and sun-bleached grasses. Its bushy tail, often held arched over the back, is one of its most distinctive features. Lightly fringed with hairs, the tail acts as a portable shade umbrella, helping the squirrel regulate its body temperature under East Africa’s intense sunlight.
The species is highly adapted to arid conditions. It lives in networks of underground burrows that provide protection from predators and relief from the heat. These burrows are shared by groups of related females and their offspring, forming stable family colonies. Males, on the other hand, tend to be more nomadic, moving between colonies in search of mates or better feeding opportunities. Above ground, unstriped ground squirrels move with quick, smooth motions, pausing frequently to survey their surroundings on their hind legs. Their posture and alert behavior reflect the constant presence of predators such as raptors, jackals, snakes, and small carnivores.
Unstriped ground squirrels are omnivorous, feeding on seeds, grasses, roots, fruits, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates. Their diet shifts with the seasons, allowing them to survive in areas where water is scarce and vegetation fluctuates dramatically throughout the year.
