A ground bird that can fly when needed

Population 1,400

One of the most unusual and fascinating birds in the world. It lives only on Waigeo Island in Indonesia, a lush tropical island near the western edge of New Guinea. Because it is found nowhere else on Earth, it is considered an island treasure and a true symbol of the region’s unique wildlife. At first glance, the bird looks plain compared to colorful parrots or birds of paradise, but its behavior makes it far more interesting than its simple brown and black feathers suggest.

In appearance, the Waigeo brushturkey is a large, sturdy bird with strong legs, a bare red face, and dark plumage. It spends most of its time on the ground rather than flying through the trees. Its body is built for walking, scratching, and digging, which are all important parts of its daily life. Unlike many birds that build neat little nests in branches, this species uses its powerful feet to create huge nesting mounds on the forest floor. These mounds can be several feet tall and wide, made from piles of leaves, soil, and rotting plant material.

What truly sets the Waigeo brushturkey apart from almost every other bird is the way it incubates its eggs. Instead of sitting on them to keep them warm, the bird relies on the heat produced naturally by the mound. As the leaves and plant matter inside the pile slowly decay, they create warmth, much like a compost heap in a garden. The female lays her eggs deep inside this warm mound, and the parents carefully maintain the temperature by adding or removing material. It is an amazing natural system that requires no body heat at all.
