A fascinating mammal that thrives in the cold, harsh environments of northern Europe and Asia, as well as in the mountainous regions of Ireland, Scotland, and the Alps. Known for its remarkable adaptations to its rugged habitat, the mountain hare is a master of survival in some of the most challenging climates on Earth.
Physically, the mountain hare is well-equipped for life in snowy and mountainous terrains. Their fur changes color with the seasons, providing excellent camouflage. In winter, its coat turns white, blending seamlessly with the snow, while in summer, it shifts to a greyish-brown, which helps it stay hidden from predators in the rocky and grassy landscapes. This seasonal molt is one of the most striking features of the mountain hare, allowing it to remain concealed year-round. Additionally, its large hind legs and strong muscles enable it to run swiftly and navigate through deep snow and rugged terrain.
Mountain hares are primarily solitary animals, although they can be seen in small groups, especially during the breeding season. They are most active during the evening and night, a behavior known as being nocturnal, which helps them avoid many predators that are active during the day. They preferred a mix of tundra, moorland, and alpine environments. They are well-adapted to cold climates and can be found at high altitudes and latitudes where few other mammals can survive. These environments provide ample cover and food resources, though the hares must continually adapt to the seasonal changes that affect their habitats. The dense vegetation of these areas offers protection from predators such as foxes, eagles, and lynxes.
