Saudi Arabia’s only endemic bird

Like other magpies, it has the classic black-and-white look and the confident, alert posture that makes magpies feel like they’re always “on duty.” In good light, the dark feathers can show a glossy sheen, and the tail looks extra long and expressive as it balances on branches or flicks during movement. What makes the Asir magpie stand out isn’t just its appearance—it’s the fact that it is Saudi Arabia’s only bird found nowhere else, making it a true national natural treasure. Because its range is so limited, even small changes to its landscape can have huge effects on its future.

People often compare it to the widespread Eurasian magpie, and that comparison is part of what makes the Asir magpie interesting. For a long time, it was treated as a local form of the Eurasian species, but it is now often recognized as its own distinct species because it has been isolated in the Arabian highlands for a very long time. That isolation matters: an island can shape wildlife, but so can a “habitat island” on land—like a mountaintop forest surrounded by drier lowlands. The Asir magpie is closely tied to juniper woodlands and well-vegetated valleys and slopes, habitats that don’t stretch far and don’t easily reconnect when broken apart.

In behavior, it still shows classic magpie character: it’s smart, watchful, and opportunistic. It forages by walking along branches, scanning the ground and vegetation, and investigating anything that might be edible. Its diet can include insects and other small animals, fruit, and whatever seasonal food is available, which is typical of magpies’ flexible “eat what you can find” style. It is also a bird that learns quickly—where food is reliable, where danger appears, and which places are worth checking again.
