Population

A small, charismatic amphibian found widely across Europe, with its range extending into parts of Asia and North Africa. Known for its vibrant green color, which can sometimes shift to a grey or brown depending on the environment and temperature, this frog is not only a favorite subject of nature enthusiasts but also plays an important ecological role.

Typically, European tree frogs are quite small and have slender bodies and long, powerful legs, which are perfectly adapted for an arboreal (tree-dwelling) lifestyle. One of the most distinctive features of these frogs is their adhesive toe pads, which allow them to climb smooth surfaces and perch on branches or leaves effortlessly.

The European tree frog is primarily known for its loud and melodic mating calls, which can be heard during the breeding season, typically from late March to June. These calls are especially prominent at night when males gather around water bodies and compete to attract females. The breeding habitats are usually still or slow-moving waters, where females lay their eggs. The tadpoles that hatch are aquatic and undergo metamorphosis, transforming into tree-dwelling frogs and completing their life cycle.

One fun fact about the European tree frog is its ability to change color. This ability helps them blend into their surroundings, providing camouflage from predators. Their primary predators include birds, small mammals, and larger insects. When threatened, these frogs can also produce a distress call, different from their mating call, to deter predators or warn other frogs.

European tree frogs feed on a variety of insects and other small invertebrates. Their diet helps control pest populations, making them beneficial for natural pest control. They are active hunters, primarily at night, using their excellent vision to spot prey.
