A medium-sized bird of prey that lives mainly in wooded and forested regions, where dense trees and shaded clearings shape its way of life. Unlike buzzards that prefer wide open plains or mountains, the forest buzzard is closely tied to woodland habitats, using trees for shelter, nesting, and hunting. It has broad wings, a sturdy body, and a calm, watchful presence. Its plumage is usually a mix of browns and creams, often with subtle streaks or mottling that help it blend into tree bark and leafy surroundings.
One of the forest buzzard’s most distinctive traits is how it hunts. Rather than soaring high above open land for long periods, it often stays closer to the canopy or perches quietly on tall trees. From these hidden lookout points, it scans the forest floor for movement. When prey appears, the buzzard drops down in a smooth, controlled descent. This hunting style is well-suited to forests, where visibility is limited, and surprise plays a key role. Its sharp eyesight and patient nature make it an effective hunter even in thick vegetation.
What sets the forest buzzard apart from other buzzards is its strong reliance on woodland environments. While many buzzards adapt easily to farmland or open grasslands, the forest buzzard thrives where trees are plentiful. It feeds on a wide range of prey, including small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects, depending on what the forest provides. This varied diet allows it to adjust to seasonal changes, such as when certain prey becomes scarce. Its ability to live quietly and efficiently in forests makes it less noticeable than buzzards seen soaring over open areas.
