Medium-sized and powerfully built, it has the classic “accipiter” look: short, rounded wings for quick turns through trees and a long, narrow tail with dark bands that work like a rudder when it weaves between branches. Adults often show a dark, steel-blue to bluish-gray back with a darker head, while the underside is paler with warmer tones and fine barring. Young birds look browner and more streaked, which helps them blend into bark and shadows while they learn the ropes. It’s named after Juan Cristóbal Gundlach, a pioneering naturalist who devoted much of his life to studying Cuba’s wildlife—so in a way, every mention of the hawk is a little nod to Cuban natural history.
This hawk is built for ambush. Instead of soaring high like some raptors, it prefers to slip through forest cover, using trees as a curtain until it’s close enough to strike. Its favorite meals are other birds, and it’s strong enough to take surprisingly large prey for its size—local pigeons and doves, quail, and even native parrots have been recorded in its diet. That bird-heavy menu is one reason it’s so tied to wooded habitats: it needs forests not only to hide its approach but also to live among the birds it hunts. If you’re trying to imagine its style, think “quiet, sudden, and precise”: a pause in the canopy, a rapid burst of wingbeats, and then silence again.
Like many forest hawks, it can be heard as well as seen: its calls include sharp, cutting notes and higher, more urgent sounds used during courtship, nesting, or when defending its space. It’s the kind of bird that feels “present” in a forest even when it stays hidden—an unseen thread in the ecosystem’s daily rhythm.
