A majestic yet elusive deer native to the mountainous regions of southern Chile and Argentina. This species inhabits the temperate forests, shrublands, and alpine meadows of the Patagonian Andes. The Huemul prefers remote and rugged terrains, often found at altitudes ranging from 500 to 1700 meters (1,640 to 5,577 feet). These areas provide the dense vegetation and secluded environments necessary for their survival and reproduction.

The Huemul is a robust and stocky deer, well-adapted to the harsh and variable climate of the Andes. They have thick, coarse fur that is predominantly brownish-gray, which helps them blend into their surroundings. The fur also provides insulation against cold temperatures. Males are distinguished by their simple, forked antlers, which they shed and regrow annually. Both sexes have relatively short legs and a compact body structure, ideal for navigating steep and rocky terrain.

These deers are known for their solitary and elusive nature. They are most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often resting in sheltered areas during the day to avoid predators and extreme weather conditions. Their strong legs and compact bodies enable them to navigate the rugged Andean terrain with agility and ease. The Huemul’s thick fur provides essential insulation against the cold, while their keen senses of sight and hearing help them detect potential threats. Their cryptic coloration further aids in avoiding predators by blending into their natural surroundings.
