A majestic bird of prey native to the Iberian Peninsula. It is one of the most impressive raptors in Europe, known for its large size, striking appearance, and powerful hunting abilities. The Spanish eagle primarily inhabits open woodlands, grasslands, and marshes, where it can find an abundance of prey and suitable nesting sites.

Spanish eagles are opportunistic; their diet primarily consists of small to medium-sized mammals and birds. Rabbits are a particularly important part of their diet, especially in areas where they are abundant. However, the eagles also hunt hares, rodents, and various birds, including waterfowl and pigeons. They are skilled hunters, using their keen eyesight to spot prey from high in the sky before swooping down with great speed and precision. Their powerful talons and beaks are well-adapted for catching and killing their prey.

The Spanish eagle’s habitat preferences include a mix of open areas for hunting and wooded areas for nesting. They favor mature forests with tall trees, but they can also be found in more open landscapes if there are sufficient food resources and nesting sites available. The presence of suitable habitat is crucial for their survival, as it directly impacts their ability to find food and raise their young successfully.

Behaviorally, the Spanish eagle is a solitary and territorial bird, especially during the breeding season. It maintains and defends large territories, which can span several square kilometers, from other eagles and potential threats. The Spanish eagle is known for its impressive aerial displays, which include soaring, diving, and even talon-grappling with rivals or mates. These displays serve to establish territory and play a role in courtship and pair bonding.
