This species is famous for its unique appearance—bold dark bands stretch across its pale body, giving it a zebra-like pattern that distinguishes it from other cobras. Its combination of beauty, venomous power, and adaptability makes it one of Africa’s most fascinating reptiles.
The Western Barred Spitting Cobra is a medium- to large-sized snake. Its coloration varies from light gray to pinkish or sandy brown, marked with 70 to 100 black or dark brown bands across its body and tail. The head is often darker, with a broad black throat band that adds to its dramatic appearance. This coloration provides excellent camouflage in the dry, rocky, and sandy environments it inhabits. Its body is smooth and cylindrical, designed for fast, fluid movement, and when threatened, it spreads its narrow hood and rears up in a classic cobra posture—an unmistakable warning display.
The Western Barred Spitting Cobra is primarily nocturnal, becoming active after sunset when the heat of the day subsides. It hunts a variety of small prey, including frogs, rodents, birds, and other reptiles, using its potent venom to subdue them quickly. Like all spitting cobras, it possesses a remarkable defense mechanism: it can accurately spit venom toward the eyes of a perceived threat from distances up to two meters (six feet). The snake aims with precision, and contact with the eyes can cause intense pain, swelling, and even permanent blindness if not rinsed immediately. When cornered, it may hiss loudly, spread its hood, and spit repeatedly before resorting to a bite. Despite its defensive abilities, this cobra usually prefers to retreat rather than fight.
