Population

A sleek, agile, and highly adaptable carnivore found across South and Southeast Asia. Its range stretches from India, Nepal, and Bhutan through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. This versatile mongoose thrives in a variety of habitats, including wetlands, riverbanks, forests, farmlands, and even the edges of villages.

Despite its name, the crab-eating mongoose does not rely solely on crabs for food, but it is exceptionally well-suited to catching them. The species is often seen near rivers, streams, paddy fields, and marshes, where crustaceans are abundant. Its partially webbed toes and strong claws make it a skilled wader and digger, able to probe mud, overturn stones, and snatch crabs and freshwater animals with remarkable speed. However, its diet is incredibly flexible. It also eats fish, frogs, insects, rodents, birds, eggs, and various fruits. This varied diet helps it survive in environments where food availability changes throughout the year.

In appearance, the crab-eating mongoose is sturdy and well-built, with a long, bushy tail that helps it balance while climbing or moving along uneven terrain. Its fur is coarse and often marked with faint stripes or a salt-and-pepper pattern that provides excellent camouflage among river rocks and forest debris. Its face is narrow with keen eyes and a pointed snout—perfect for sniffing out hidden prey. Unlike some other mongoose species that live in large, noisy groups, the crab-eating mongoose tends to be solitary or found in pairs, moving quietly and methodically as it searches for food.

Behaviorally, the crab-eating mongoose is both shy and intelligent. It is typically crepuscular or nocturnal, becoming active during dawn, dusk, and nighttime to avoid heat and predators. When threatened, it can be surprisingly bold, standing its ground, raising its tail, and giving off sharp growls or hisses.
