Basically a “rock rabbit” that treats cliffs like home

Population >10,000

A rabbit with a rugged, sun-baked vibe—an animal that looks at home among boulders, broken ground, and scrubby hillsides. Its fur often shows warm reddish tones mixed with browns and grays, which helps it blend into rocky soil and rust-colored stone. Compared with many rabbits that look soft and round, this hare has a leaner, longer-bodied shape and a slightly “built for climbing” feel. Its legs are strong, its posture is alert, and it carries itself like it’s always ready to spring between rocks.

Many hares are famous for long, open runs across grassland, relying on speed and wide space. A rock hare plays a different game: it uses quick turns, short bursts, and the safety of crevices, ledges, and thick shrubs tucked between stones. When danger appears, it may dash uphill, slip behind a boulder, and freeze in the shadow where its reddish coat blends into the background. This “rock-and-hide” strategy can make it seem almost ghostlike—there one moment, gone the next—because it doesn’t always flee in a straight line the way people expect a hare to do.

The Natal red rock hare also differs in its daily rhythm and habits. It tends to be most active when the heat eases, often moving at dusk and during the night, then resting in shelter during the day. Instead of making a deep burrow like some animals, it may use a simple resting spot tucked under a bush, in tall grass, or beside rocks that break the wind and block the sun. Its diet is flexible: it feeds on grasses, leaves, and other available plants, switching choices with the seasons and the local patch of vegetation. Because rocky habitats can be harsh and dry, the ability to “take what’s there” is a big advantage.
