Medium to large in size, it has a sturdy body, a short square tail, and the confident posture typical of amazons. Most of its plumage is rich green, which helps it blend into the forest canopy, but its name comes from the bold red patch across its forehead and brow. This red coloring can extend around the eyes and sometimes onto the cheeks, giving the bird an expressive and slightly dramatic look. Hints of blue on the wings and yellowish tones on the face add extra depth to its appearance, making it one of the most colorful amazons in its range.

What distinguishes the red-browed amazon from other amazon parrots is its limited range and strong dependence on a specific ecosystem. It lives almost entirely within the Atlantic Forest, a region known for its incredible biodiversity but also for severe habitat loss. While many amazons occupy large ranges across different habitats, the red-browed amazon is closely tied to humid forests with tall, mature trees. This specialization makes it unique, but also vulnerable, as forest fragmentation reduces both feeding and nesting opportunities.

The red-browed amazon is a social and vocal bird, often seen in pairs or small flocks. Its calls are loud, clear, and typically Amazon-like, carrying far through the forest as birds communicate while flying or feeding. These parrots are intelligent and alert, spending much of their day moving through the canopy in search of food. Their diet includes fruits, seeds, nuts, and blossoms, and they rely heavily on seasonal fruiting trees.

Another important characteristic of the red-browed amazon is its strong reliance on tree cavities for nesting. Old, large trees provide the hollows needed to safely raise chicks. This makes the preservation of mature forest especially critical for the species’ survival. Unlike more adaptable parrots that may nest in a variety of structures, the red-browed amazon depends on these natural cavities, which take decades to form.
