    Otocyon – Bat-eared fox

    The ears not only resemble a bat’s ear, but they also have the same purpose – locate insects

    The bat-eared fox has a small face, a white, raccoon-like mask, and a pointed, short muzzle. They have an ashy-grey pelage on the body while white on their short limbs and tail. The underside of the neck and the belly is relatively paler in color. The ears are huge in proportion to their head which also has a role in thermoregulation.

    Their lifestyle depends heavily on their range; the populations in the Serengeti region are nocturnal all year long, while those in South Africa are nocturnal in summer and diurnal in winter. They mostly feed on harvester termites and dung beetles, and the body fluids of these insects are also their water source.
